Depression glass facts make for interesting conversation, especially when you're at a convention or talking amongstother Depression glass aficionados. So here are a few itemsto get you started so you, too, can have some meaningfulknowledge to put on the plate when you and your Depressionglass collector friends gather ?round and chat.English Hobnail leads the pack as the design with around the most available pieces still out there for collectors.Westmoreland Glass Company produced the English Hobnailpattern from the late 1920s to the 1980s, with theDepression-era pieces made in eight different colors. Intotal, 175 pieces of this particular design were created.Rose Cameo, conversely, holds the record for the leastnumber of pieces available in a pattern. The BelmontTumbler Company held the patent for Rose Cameo, and onlysix pieces of this design made it to the marketplace: aplate, a footed sherbet, a footed tumbler, a berry bowl, and a 5-inch and 6-inch bowl. Because Belmont manufacturedonly tumblers and was trying to recover from a massivefire, experts speculate the actual production of this raredesign happened at the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, only afew miles away. A six-piece set of tumblers ? the patternwas only made in green ? in mint condition can be had forbetween $150 and $175 (prices may have changed since I wrotethis). The Jeanette Glass Company breaks all records for coming upwith the most patterns. Jeanette made 11 patterns ofDepression glass between 1928 and 1946: Sunburst, Homespun,Swirl, Doric and Pansy, Windsor, Sunflower, Doric, Adam,Sierra, Floral, and Cherry Blossom. And then at the other end of the spectrum, the Fenton GlassCompany produced only a single pattern of Depression glass? the Lincoln Inn.Of the 200+ patterns of Depression glass created, footedsalt and pepper shakers from Hocking's Mayfair designdemand some of the very highest prices. Don't flinchwhen (or if) you have a close encounter with one: They gofor more than $9,000, which makes them 1 of the most expensiveitems of all Depression glass patterns at the time of writing this article.Hazel-Atlas produced the Aurora pattern in beautiful cobaltblue for one year only ? from 1937 to 1938.Jeanette and Federal glass companies manufactured the twomost reproduced patterns, Cherry Blossom and Madrid.Jeanette produced 43 pieces of the Cherry Blossom designfrom 1930 to 1939 in five colors. Federal's Madrid outputnumbered 45 pieces in five colors from 1932 to 1939. Thepopularity of these designs, of course, made reproductionsimpossible to avoid, but also makes the originalDepression-era versions that much harder to detect. This article, perhaps, may inspire you to dig deeper andfind out even more about the Depression glass productswe've all come to love. Hopefully, with these bits andpieces of trivia, you've learned something you didn'talready know. If you haven't, then you need to be writingyour own articles on Depression glass trivia andenlightening the rest of us!
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center have identified a "safety circuit" in the brain which, when activated, seems to buffer against stressful and anxiety-provoking events, according to a newly-released study in the journal Neuron. "This new finding has enormous implications for healing anxiety and related disorders, including depression and PTSD," says psychologist Dr. Bob Murray, co-author of the highly-acclaimed Creating Optimism: A Proven, 7-Step Program for Overcoming Depression (McGraw-Hill, paperback 2005). "The key healing factor is enabling people to activate that safety circuit. In our Uplift Program, we've been teaching people how to do just that, and now we have an even greater understanding of that safety mechanism in the brain." The Columbia researchers discovered that when mice were in an unsafe situation there was increased activity in a region of the brain called the amygdala, which processes emotions and is activated in fear responses. As long as the mice were in that unsafe situation, nothing would decrease their anxiety. However, when they were allowed to enter an area where they felt safe, a previously unknown "safety circuit," which exists deep within the brain, was activated. This area is responsible for the good feelings associated with safety and security and is in a part of the brain responsible for happiness and good feelings.Once the mice were in the safe space and this area had been activated, then events that normally triggered fear responses in the amygdala had little effect. In humans with mood disorders, the amygdala is often hyper-active and doesn't stop sending alarm signals even when danger has passed or is seen to be a false alarm. According to Dr. Murray, "This finding helps explain why our program has a 94% success rate in follow-up questionnaires. We've always realized that feeling safe was the basis for resilience and healing mood disorders, and that humans do this through a network of supportive relationships. We give people highly effective and practical tools for creating secure and trustworthy relationships in their families, at work and with friends, which activate the brain's innate mechanism for healing."The international Uplift Program, which Dr. Murray founded with his partner, Alicia Fortinberry, offers effective solutions to mood disorders that don't necessarily involve medication, is sponsored by leading healthcare institutions including the University of South Florida and California Institute of Integral Studies..

Obesity in America has been blamed on many different things; increased technology such as video games is one, as well as more fast food restaurants. However I do not believe that these are the only causes of such a large amount of obesity within the USA.The cause that gets mostly overlooked is the portrayal of men and women in society. Not video games or more fast food restaurants, but the way women and men are portrayed by the media, movies and television shows over the past decade. There are a few exceptions such as "The Parkers" or "Rosanne" but for the most part there is not an obese person on television who is in touch with the youth. When you walk outside and see a billboard of a sexy model in lingerie or turn on the television and see another underweight woman or go to the movies yet again to see a woman with large breasts and a small waist has to be a large contributor.Young men and women are forced to look like these models. The ones who can't do it end up getting depressed, which is a large factor in causing obesity.Forty percent of all Americans have been depressed sometime within their life. That is the most world wide, so it is easy to see why over a third of all Americans are overweight. This is not just a fluke. Depression and obesity have been proven to be linked.Perhaps not all of the cases are caused by these fashion symbols, but it should not be dismissed as being a large contributor. This is the age of plastic surgery and breast enhancements, if a woman did not feel that she had to have these two things in order to be beautiful they would not be so popular. So what causes her to want this? Men and of course societies portrayal of women. This is not just a woman's problem however. Men are put under just as much scrutiny as women. A man must be strong, well in shape, and not too fat or too skinny. They have to act a certain way, be tough and able to take charge. Some men just aren't this way and again end up with long term depression.Society must change as a whole in order for our children of this country to feel wanted and feel beautiful again..

Exercise, intellectual stimulation, surgery, meditation or detox ? you name it, we love it. Let's face it, we live in a society obsessed with staying young. So, when you mention to someone that bingo may well be a key to youth, the image of pensioners playing in a retirement home may well prompt them to ask a few questions. It's not chess or bridge, but researchers insist that bingo can keep your mind trim and bring more to your youthfulness than just cash prizes and idle chitchat. Bingo players who have been playing bingo for a sustained period of time have been found to have superior reflexes in many cases to non-bingo players. The speed and mental agility required to scan six bingo cards in time before the next call is certainly better than stagnating in front of the television and has been responsible for keeping the minds of many people of different ages fit and healthy. As we get older, the blood begins to run at a thinner rate to the brain. Using our brains less can result in a decrease of mental agility and flexibility. Playing bingo is an enjoyable way to keep those attributes intact. The competitive spirit of the game is also something that helps to regenerate our bodies when we take ourselves out of the workforce. The experience of retirement can very much and rightly so, equate to slowing things down. People take things at a far more leisurely pace. This is what is so attractive and something many look forward to after a fast-moving career. The only problem is that as we do that, so we lose a sense of the invigoration that the competitive energy used to spark. The great thing about playing bingo is that it is able to reignite that spark, depending on where you are playing. Certain bingo halls can be notoriously competitive. Players have developed ways of managing to cope with as many cards as possible by turning them upside down, paying for someone else to keep an eye on them and even continue other activities, such as knitting while the game is in play. The callers can move relatively quickly and you have to stay on your toes in order not to miss a call or a number. To many, this competitive edge and speed aspect is so vital to the maintenance of their energy and fighting spirit. It keeps all of the senses in a sharp shape and forces the player to sustain some of the efficiency and rigour they may have been used to when working or even when their bodies may have had slightly more endurance than they do now. Players have to stretch themselves to the limit and keep the competitive flame burning by the allure of large cash prizes. The social aspect of the game is crucial as well. It is the combination of the interaction and communication so prevalent in the bingo halls with the mental agility and stimulation that many suggest can contribute to the prevention of depression. Depression is something that becomes more and more of a concern as the mind begins to deteriorate. People find they are unable to stimulate themselves as they used to do and hence become very frustrated and bored. Therefore, the sustenance of mental stimulation and optimum functioning is so important to a balanced state of mind.A healthy mind may in many cases also signify a healthy body. If the mind begins to deteriorate, many health practitioners believe it can influence the degeneration of the body immensely. So it is not just the brain that bingo seems to be able to keep in prime condition. As lives become less and less active physically (often because of unavoidable circumstances), it becomes more and more important to place the energy we used to put into our bodies, into our minds in order to help sustain both..

Nicocure?'s amazing formula safely mimics the properties of nicotine. It acts on the "Nicotine Receptors" in your body, effectively fooling it into thinking it's getting more Nicotine, while keeping you calm and relaxed during Nicotine withdrawal. It will help you quit smoking for life, for good. The proprietary herbal formulation in Nicocure? Patch contains herbal ingredients that act as natural substitutes for nicotine and therefore satisfy the body's craving for this substance, but without all the negative side effects of the patches containing actual nicotine! The natural ingredients will make you crave fewer cigarettes every day. This gradual process makes you quit with no withdrawal symptoms and requires less will power and effort from your part. Withdrawal symptoms will be milder due to the natural nicotine substitute, which helps you shake the nicotine habit gradually. Furthermore, to help you in this process, the Nicocure? Patch herbal formulation contains herbal ingredients that also combat the anxiety and depression that affect most people who are trying to quit smoking. The nicotine content in your body will gradually fade off as you wear the patch, and to help you speed up this process, Nicocure? Patch contains antioxidant herbal ingredients to help detoxify your body and get rid of the nicotine. The other good news is that most of the harmful effects of smoking for years will start to disappear gradually once you stop smoking completely and as the nicotine intoxication wears off.More than 10 years of experience have contributed to the patented herb extraction process used to process the unique herbal formulation in Nicocure? Patch. The patch application method allows for the active ingredients to penetrate the skin and reach the bloodstream faster and more conveniently than any other method. Other methods such as pills, even if effective, must be taken several times per day since they lose most of their active ingredient as they are processed by stomach acids, eventually minimizing their effect. Furthermore, the patch system eliminates the need to remember to take pills and the inconvenience of carrying these with you throughout the day. Just apply a Nicocure? Patch in the morning and replace it the following day with a new one.More information is available at http://consumerhealthproducts.com/quit-smoking.

The rose is perhaps one of the most powerful symbols in the metaphysical world. It is also one of the most accessible tools that can be used for everyday magic. The gift of a rose is also one of the simplest ways to say, "I love you" without too much hocus-pocus. The thorns on its stems represent the "prick" of love and the overcoming of obstacles to achieve your desires. It is the pinnacle of metaphorical purity and symbolizes completion and perfection. The element associated with the rose is Water, so it is particularly friendly to the astrological signs of Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. Both Mercury and Venus rule this flower. A bath in rose petals or rose water (which is distilled from the buds) is said to attract love to the bathing beauty. An ancient custom is to sprinkle the bed of newly weds with rose petals to sweeten the initial carnal relations. In ancient alchemical formulas the red rose is used as a masculine principle and the rose represents the feminine or receptive principle. The combination of the two (perhaps growing the two bushes intertwined in the garden) represents harmony and unity. Rose oil, which is extracted through a rather expensive process from the petals of the flower, is also prominent in both love and healing rituals. When applied the temples the oil is said to cure a headache. When applied to the thighs or breasts it is supposed to attract a suitor. As an essential oil, the rose's essence is thought to relieve depression, PMS and postnatal depression. It is also said to cure frigidity and impotence. Bach's Herbal Remedies makes a distillation of the Wild Rose. Taking drops of this under your tongue is thought to help the patient free themselves from a rut or feelings of hopelessness and being trapped by fate. Rose water is used in cooking spells and added to curries and cake mixes to infuse the dish with good spirits and love attracting qualities. The water is also splashed on the skin (but not around the eyes) to give you a complexion as dewy as the flower. The rose historically also symbolizes the female genitalia and is associated with Cupid, Eros, Adonis, Aphrodite, Isis, Hathor, and Demeter. Rose water and rose petals are often used in magical rituals to honor these gods and goddesses.Although red roses are traditionally seen as symbols of lust, love and the flower also has a long association with such qualities as purity, compassion and divine perfection. The white rose in particular has an affinity with the Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit. The color of the rose is also significant. Red roses symbolize love, sex and passion. Pink roses suggest friendship, joy, gratitude and fun. Yellow roses can symbolize enthusiasm, but according to some folklore, the yellow rose can symbolize deception or "the perfect crime." Orange roses signify enthusiasm, passion and a lust for life. White roses are symbolic of significant landmarks in life (such as death, birth and marriage), unconditional love, purity and innocence. The flower is not the only part of the rose that is used in divination and magic. To discover their romantic future, women used to take pluck three green rose leaves and name one after each of their suitors. The one that stayed green the longest was her soulmate. Rose hips can be strung like beads on a thread and worn as a necklace to attract love. Drinking rose-hip tea is thought to increase one's powers of prophecy.Ironically, for a flower that is often given as a gift, the most powerful roses are said to be those that have been stolen from another person's garden..

We watch the annual TV specials which emotionally choke us up. We watch those traditional, mushy movies like Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life which bring sentimental tears to our eyes. We watch those heartwrenching Hallmark commercials which make us sob dramatically. All of these portray the ideal and they always end happily. But real life isn't like that.Watching and listening to all the hype and sweetness reminds many of us of our losses. We think of the things we won't have this year, or any year ever again. The holiday season is actually the season of much depression and sadness. Just imagine for a moment how many losses a person of 70, 80 or 90 may have endured. The Bearslaughtered them by the thousands. There was "Blood in the Streets" at thewire houses where Daytraders congregate. Did we witness the beginning of aRecession or Depression last week? There are many sound reasons for betting on the Bear. Here are ahalf dozen reasons that the Bear should win.1. We've had a 17 year Bull Market. It has gone on too long and the DIA istoo high.2. Private businesses are making less profit.3. Few public companies are profitable.4. Business costs are going up faster than business revenue.5. The Feds should tighten the money supply. I doubt they'll do it becausethey will fear the Bear and the potential of a Recession.6. Inflation is higher than the Government reports. The Government removedheating oil and gasoline from the inflation index because they have nearlydoubled in price. There is one simple reason that the Bull will win. After the 1987Market Correction, the Government decided to allow the Feds to invest inthe Market. The Feds started buying stocks around noon Friday (4/14/00).They will continue to buy until panic ends. Meanwhile, they have theweekend to manipulate Market Forces. It's a matter of aligning allies andeducating the press and others as to the reasons the Bull should prevailbefore the November election. As long as the U. S. Dollar is strong, the Bull will win everybattle with the Bear. The Feds buying unlimited stock means the StockMarket is backed by the "Full Faith of the U. S. Government." For the Bearto win, the U. S. Dollar must be seen as worthless. This will eventuallyhappen. It's unlikely to happen in the next ten or fifteen years.
For those who experience it, post-traumatic stress disorder can be an incredibly debilitating disease that can prevent you from living a full life. This disorder can bring back moments of severe stress so clearly that it is almost as though you are reliving the moment all over again.First diagnosed in war veterans, post-traumatic stress disorder was initially named "shell shock" then "battle fatigue". However, by the time of the conflict in Vietnam, it was given the name "post-traumatic stress disorder" (PTSD) in order to give a clearer idea of what exactly is at work. As well, it is not only found in war veterans. In fact, it can be seen in people who were abused as children, rape victims, people who have to clean up after disaster, or anyone else who has undergone severe stress at any point in their lives.Unfortunately, the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder is still in its infancy. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and neurologists are still coming to grips with the disease and its causes and effects, but they are learning new things constantly. In a strictly biochemical sense, PTSD has its root causes at the moment of stress itself. It seems that at moments of extreme stress, the biochemical system in charge of adjusting to stress is reset, like a computer. It is as though the system is so overloaded that it has to shut itself down and restart. Unfortunately, this also causes the mind to quickly return to that moment when it had to start and stop, which can cause flashbacks to the moments when the shock occurred. The other results of post-traumatic stress disorder include anger, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, memory problems including amnesia, or any of a host of other mental disorders. Unfortunately, many of these disorders are treated individually without concern for the root cause. This is particularly worrisome because approximately 3.6% of adults between the ages of 18 and 54 are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and the vast majority of them go undiagnosed and untreated. As well, women are twice as likely as men to experience PTSD after a sudden shock. For those who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, there are some ways to treat it. The most common form of treatment is through psychotherapy. A therapist has several tools at his or her disposal and can work with the sufferer to root out the causes of the disorder and help cure it. As well, a psychiatrist is the best person to talk to in order to actually diagnose PTSD in the first place, helping the sufferer to at least understand what is happening. Knowing what is wrong is the first step to curing it, after all.Group treatment is also effective, as it allows people to talk about their feelings of guilt, shame, anxiety, or depression with others who feel the same way. This allows people to get comfortable with one another and talk about their feelings openly and honestly. By getting the issues out in the open, it almost spreads it out and allows the trauma to dissipate by opening it up to other people. However, there are some medications that can be used to help treat post-traumatic stress disorder. Mostly, these drugs are used to treat some of the symptoms of PTSD, such as depression or anxiety, allowing the sufferer to at least alleviate the condition. Most of these drugs take some time to work before they actually show results so, if you have been put onto medication for PTSD, give it a few weeks before you start expecting relief. However, studies have shown that the best way to treat post-traumatic stress disorder is to nip it in the bud shortly after the trauma has occurred. The usual method is to sit down with someone who has suffered a trauma about 3-10 days after the trauma occurred. This will allow the feelings to be fresh, while it also helps people relieve the trauma by bringing it out before it hides itself in the mind. There has been some success with this sort of treatment, though it does require the trauma to be recognized early.Post-traumatic stress disorder is a surprisingly common disorder that often goes unnoticed and untreated. However, with improvements in therapy and medication, there is new hope for those who suffer from this debilitating disorder..
